MOVING

Once the contract has been negotiated, it's time to start thinking about the move. Will you move yourself or hire a moving company? No matter which you decide, be sure to check out my moving tips!

Moving

The benefit of hiring a moving company is that they do all the work, and while each company may be a little different, typically they provide the following services:

  • Packing & Inventory of household goods
  • Transport & Delivery to new location
  • Unpacking
  • Insurance for damaged/lost items

Remember that every moving company is a little different, so be sure to ask questions and know ahead of time exactly what is included in the service you are purchasing.

Self-Move

If you plan to do the packing and moving of your household belongings on your own, be sure to consider the following:

  • Size of the moving truck required to accomodate all your belongings
  • Driving differences between a moving truck and a regular vehicle
  • If towing a vehicle, ensure the truck you rent has the required towing equipment available
  • Furniture/appliance dollies, furniture pads and straps will be required for leverage to move larger household items and protection of your belonging during the transport
  • Fuel costs- be sure to take the rental truck back full to save money.
  • Boxes, tape, mattress bags, mirror & picture boxes are an additional expense of self-moves. Start accumulating packing materials from various sources to help save money as soon as you know you are planning to relocate.
  • Reserve your rental truck as soon as you can & be prepared to pay a deposit to secure the reservation.
  • Check your insurance company and the rental company to see if your household contents are covered while in transit. If not, be sure to obtain adequate insurance prior to moving.

Remember that moving yourself may save your money, but can be a very stressful process.

USEFUL MOVING TIPS

  • Keep receipts of all of your travel expenses for your taxes and/or if you are working with a relocation company or a corporate move.
  • Do not wax or oil wood furniture before moving, as it may soften the wood, making it vulnerable to imprinting from furniture pads.
  • Do not ship computer diskettes on the moving truck, send via insured mail or carry yourself to avoid damage or loss.
  • To avoid damage to electronics, unplug them a day before the move to eliminate internal heat in the appliance. Upon delivery, wait until items are room temperature before turning them back on.
  • Remember that moving can put a strain on your pets as well, so plan ahead to accomodate their needs.
